  SQUARE ROPE

The most common rope construction is 3-stand hawser laid, which is achieved by forming a spiral of three strands twisted together.

For marine applications however a different construction has been developed known as 8-strand plaited, or more commonly square rope construction. This type of construction, in addition to retaining the strength of 3-strand ropes, produces ropes that are more flexible, non-kinking, and have exceptional grip on bitts and the drum ends of winches.

APPLICATIONS:
SHIP MOORING LINES
DEEP SEA TOWING
TARGET TOW ROPES
OCEANOGRAPHIC MOORINGS
HARBOUR TOWING
SUPPLY VESSEL MOORING SYSTEMS
ROE TAILS

* THE MINIMUM BREAKING FORCE MUST IN NO WAY BE CONSTRUED AS THE SAFE WORKING LOAD OF THE ROPE
8-strand Plaited square ropes are manufactured in accordance with and conform to the size, number and minimum breaking force requirements of Australian Standard AS4142-2-1993.

8-strand Plaited Square Ropes are manufactured by plaiting the strand in a two over two formation, and to ensure true twist balance, half the strands are twisted in the right hand direction and the other half in the left hand direction.

Size for size, 8-strand Plaited Square Ropes are equal in strength to the 3-strand hawser laid ropes.

8-strand Plaited Square Ropes can be manufactured from all the natural and man-made fibres. However, the most poular fibre types are Nylon, Polypropylene Film, Silverline and Polyester.

They can be readily spliced but the splicing technique is different to that used for 3-strand hawser laid ropes. It can be easily mastered and the instructions for the production of high efficiency eye and short splices are available.

The extendibility of square ropes is slightly higher than that of the 3-strand hawser laid ropes because of the 'setting in' of the eight strands, but other physical attributes of the two types of ropes are the same size per size.
